Research focus of the Department:

The aim of the Department is to initiate and develop research work in the areas of ecolinguistics and communicology, focusing on various forms of human communication in the dominant ecological perspective. This perspective is highly interdisciplinary, since it involves the cooperation of the following areas of linguistic research: general, comparative, historical and descriptive linguistics, applied linguistics, pragmalinguistics, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, sociolinguistics, ethnolinguistics, communicology, language geography and language planning, and semiotics (including general and applied semiotics), as well as of the following autonomous scholarly disciplines: anthropology, biology, geography (including population geography), psychology, sociology, demography and statistics. The Department's research is aimed at answering questions concerning:

(a) the uniqueness of language and human communication vis-a-vis other communication systems occurring in Nature,

(b) the management of language and communication resources by human communicating agents functioning in various communicative niches (such as the daily routine and general culture niche, the professional niche, the citizenship niche) and public spaces,

(d) the typology of linguistic communities with regard to the concepts of language power and health (language robustness/vitality),

also answering questions concerning:

(e) the effectiveness, successfulness and comfortability of human agent communication activities in various communicative niches and in communicative encounters, as well as in diverse translingustic, transnational (transethnic) and transcultural contexts. Special research focus is placed on the monitoring and profiling of various natural languages which interact with each other in the Natural Language Global Arena and on their fates (the general motto of the Department: habent sua fata linguae!).

Most recently, focus has also been placed on the nature and social roles of visage (image) and the mediating power of natural languages.

Overall didactic mission of the Department of Ecocommunication:

I. Structure of the teaching program focuses on:

TRANS-DESIGN

A modular supplementary M.A. program implemented in order to:

(a) enhance and advance general and specific communication skills of transnational-transethnic-transcultural-translinguistic hybrid transcommunicators, also being able to function as mediators-negotiators, and

(b) make students sensitive to problems of natural language ecology, LANGUAGE PLANNING AND LANGUAGE POLICY.

II. The implementation of the teaching program is expected to lead to the shaping of:

(A) THE SYNCMASTER:

who is aware of the following general premises:

“THE TRANSCOMMUNICATOR CommunicateS with impact”

“Knowledge of how to communicate is power and success”

(b) THE HYBRID TRANSCOMMUNICATOR

who COMMUNICATES ACROSS BORDERS is able to function as:

- The Transsigner

- The Supertalker

- The Superwriter

- The (Multi)Media Hybrid Transcommunicator.
